MIDSUMMER
DAY’S REVERIE
Summer days on the farm
the Sun hangs hazily, lazily
in the sky, the air quite still.
The sound of bees drifting
from flower to flower,
barn swallows darting
here and there, the percussive
slaps at elusive mosquitos,
the lowing of cows in the
meadow, the put-put of
outdated outboard motors
of the fishing boats on
the lake across the highway,
all lend a part to Summer’s
symphony of sound.
The voice of a little girl
singing the songs of
her favorite Disney movie
drifts over the stillness,
the missing “t” from her
words lending a whole
new meaning to the lyric
“I’ve seen a peanut stand
and a rubber band,” much
to the amusement of the
little girl’s Grandma and
her Grandma’s friend
who mutually agree
that they have not seen
one stand in quite a while,
smiling as they remember.
